Eruptions: Over 20 major eruptions since 1104. Eruptions have been more frequent since 1970. Most eruptions are explosive and cause damge. Eruptions are characterized by eruption plumes, then lave fountains, and culminate in large lava flows. The last major eruption was in March of 2000.
Hekla, one of the most active and famous of Icelands volcanoes, is found on the Iclandic rift zone which is a part of the Midatlantic Ridge. The Icelandic verb hekla means crochet. During the Viking time they used to crochet hoods of white wool. The name Hekla comes from the fact that Hekla is under a pernament blanket of snow that looks like a hood.
